About the role
This position assists certificated staff by performing instructional support tasks in both English and Spanish related to students' educational development within the total school environment.
Responsibilities
- Work with students under the direction of certificated teachers to facilitate academic skills and oral language development.
- Learn instructional techniques under the direction of a teacher and independently carry out instructional programs developed by the supervising teacher.
- Provide instruction to students in both English and Spanish.
- Provide small-group intervention instruction and targeted academic support in literacy and mathematics.
- Aid in the development and use of teaching aids and materials.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers.
- Possess an understanding of intermediate and primary elementary mathematics concepts sufficient to support student learning and intervention activities, or demonstrate the ability to acquire such knowledge through training and supervision.
- Assist in assessing students.
- Monitor and assist student progress in the classroom and other school activities.
- Aid certificated staff with required record keeping.
- Promote positive public relations when communicating with the public.
Other Functions
- Perform routine classroom and building clerical tasks as needed.
- Serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
Mental Demands
- Deal with a wide range of student, staff, and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service-oriented manner.
- Occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.
Physical Demands
- Varying amounts of standing, sitting, and walking depending on the age of students and classroom assignments.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- AA Degree, 72 college level credits, or ability to pass the Federal Para-Educator test.
- Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bilingual English/Spanish required.
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
- Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
- Effective communication skills, including phone and email communication.
- Desire to be a role model for students and interact positively with them.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.
Licenses/Special Requirements
- Fingerprinting and background check to determine no history of physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
- Completion of Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
- May require a CPR/First Aid card depending on job assignment.
Terms of Employment
- Para Educator on the PSE Classified Salary Schedule.
- Average of 9.5 hours per day, 5 days per week, 189 days per school year.
- PSE Salary Schedule, Retirement, SEBB Benefits, 9 Holidays, Paid Sick Leave.
