Telemetry Technician (Contingent)

Position Summary

Aids healthcare service providers by monitoring patients' EKG waveforms, interpreting results, recognizing irregular heart functions, and informing providers of potentially hazardous arrhythmias.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Maintains cardiac rhythms, reviews and tests memory alarms, sets alarm parameters, and performs arrhythmia analysis.
  • Maintains and documents cardiac rhythm strips according to hospital guidelines.
  • Communicates changes in patient telemetry status according to policy.
  • Applies and removes telemetry equipment from patients using proper technique and universal precautions.
  • Troubleshoots monitoring equipment and paging systems as needed.
  • Performs equipment maintenance tasks including routine battery changes, equipment checks, and reporting malfunctioning equipment to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains monitoring supplies at designated par levels.
  • Communicates effectively with nursing and medical staff.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to manage patients with different types of personalities.
  • Current knowledge of treatment theories, practices, and techniques relevant to the discipline.
  • Knowledge and skill with common office software applications.
  • Compliance with the Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct.

Position/Subsidiary Specific

  • Supports the mission and vision of McLaren Port Huron through behaviors that reflect and integrate its values.
  • Six (6) months experience or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
  • One (1) month of job-related experience and/or training.
  • BLS certification and Canadian equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in a medical setting, preferred.
  • Facilitates admission, discharge, and transfer procedures for patients on and off the unit.
  • Contributes to the effective communication and efficient operational needs of the unit.
  • Participates in at least fifty percent (50%) of unit staff meetings; reads and initials minutes of meetings not attended.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continued self-growth and maintenance of competency.

Qualifications

  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of course in arrhythmia detection OR one (1) year of directly related experience.
  • Preferred: Three months of job-related experience. Completion of formal coursework in EKG.
