Telecommunication Inspector

About the Role

WSP is seeking a Telecommunication Inspector for our Las Vegas, NV office, with consideration also given to Reno, NV. This is a field position working at Greenfield and Brownfield locations, including existing energized substations or transmission right of ways in various remote locations within Nevada. The role may require up to 100% travel.

This opportunity involves providing telecommunications inspection support to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, contract documents, utility requirements, and applicable industry codes and standards. You will work on telecommunications systems associated with electric transmission and substation projects, including fiber optic communication networks, OPGW installations, ADSS cable systems, SCADA communications infrastructure, and more.

Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections on telecommunications systems for electric transmission and substation projects, including fiber optic networks, OPGW, ADSS cable systems, SCADA infrastructure, and associated civil construction.
• Evaluate workmanship, material quality, installation practices, commissioning activities, and construction progress to ensure compliance with design requirements, safety regulations, and utility standards.
• Generate accurate and timely documentation, including inspection reports, testing records, punch lists, and as-built verification.
• Collect, compile, and analyze data from construction sites, utility surveys, telecommunications design packages, fiber route drawings, and other technical documentation.
• Utilize testing equipment (e.g., OTDRs, fiber power meters, fusion splice verification tools) to inspect telecommunications systems for compliance with design and utility standards.
• Apply industry standards to provide technical guidance on installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure.
• Serve as a technical consultant on construction progress, quality concerns, and field issue resolution; may act as the lead telecommunications inspector on assigned projects.
• Verify telecommunications design requirements, network capacity calculations, construction change orders, and system configurations.
• Monitor project schedules, outage coordination, contractor performance, and construction work to ensure quality assurance and safety compliance.
• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, SCADA specialists, contractors, and other stakeholders to execute telecommunications work.
• Attend pre-construction meetings, outage planning meetings, and contractor progress reviews to provide technical input.
• Assist in reviewing contractor pay quantities, field work documentation, and completed construction milestones.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports, testing summaries, punch lists, and technical documentation using photographs, sketches, and software applications.
• Assist with risk identification, constructability reviews, troubleshooting, and issue resolution for telecommunications infrastructure.
• Support work planning, field activity coordination, outage scheduling, staffing reviews, and cost estimates for inspection activities.
• Provide mentorship and training to junior inspection personnel on utility telecommunications systems and field documentation requirements.
• Coordinate with utility clients, contractors, and vendors to schedule inspections, testing, and commissioning activities.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and perform additional duties as required by business needs.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, equivalent diploma, or demonstrated proven equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 9 years of relevant post-education experience in telecommunications or construction inspection.
• Knowledge of telecommunications facilities, including Microwave Radio (MW) sites, fiber sites, collector stations, and optical amplifier sites.
• Experience with construction activities such as surveying, grading, civil work, foundations, grounding, conduit installation, tower erection, and fiber optics.
• Knowledge of working in and around energized facilities, including distribution circuits, transmission circuits, and high-voltage substations.
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Strong knowledge of construction inspection principles, field practices, and relevant codes and regulations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, photo documentation, and diagnostic tools.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach effective solutions.
• Ability to direct subcontractors and junior staff to complete tasks safely and accurately.
• Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
• Ability to work extended schedules (e.g., 12-hour days, 5-6 days a week) and travel up to 100% as required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
• 3+ years in a lead or supervisory role.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work up to 12-hour days, 5-6 days a week, if project requires.
• Willingness to travel and stay on-site for a minimum of 6 weeks at a time.
• Capability to work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
• Must wear company-provided PPE for the entire shift while onsite.
• Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. throughout the day.
• Must walk 3-5 miles per day across rough or unlevel terrain.
• Ability to step in and out of a 3/4-ton pickup truck multiple times a day.
