About the Role
The University cabling team provides 24/7/365 support to the networks across the university campus, hospitals, and clinics. The Cable Technician 1 is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the University structured cable plant. Performs patching, installation, testing, cable management, and documentation. When needed, works with the fiber team. Maintains a tidy work environment. Provides hands-on help and support to university and vendor cable technicians. Coordinates with customers to identify work scope, materials, and arrange access. Responsible for updates to the work ticketing systems and labor tracking tools. Provides verbal and written status reports to the copper supervisor and cable plant management. Responds to resolve incidents and covers for the copper supervisor as needed.
Responsibilities
- Ensures there is 24/7/365 support to the University copper cable plant
- Provides mentoring to level 1 technicians and student interns
- Must be able to distinguish cable jacket color differences
- Able to lift 80 pounds
- Maintain a valid Utah driver license
- Develops job material lists based on job scope
- Enters time and materials into tracking tools
- Monitors, responds to, and updates work order queues
- Provides hands-on help and support to the university and contractor cable technicians
- Keeps communication closets and work environments tidy
- Keeps equipment and vehicles in safe working condition
- Use test equipment to provide test results and reports
- Maintain a professional appearance and dress
- Covers for the copper supervisor as needed
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
- Field Technical Product Support Technician, I: Requires little to no related experience
- Field Technical Product Support Technician, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience
- Field Technical Product Support Technician, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience
- Field Technical Product Support Technician, IV: Requires 5+ years of related experience
Preferences
- Prefer some experience working with copper (Cat 5, Cat 6, and Cat 6A) cable
- Able to lift 80 pounds
- Experience installing and testing copper phone and network cables
- Effective human relations and customer communication skills
- Aptitude and willingness to learn copper and fiber skills
- Demonstrates pride in workmanship
- Must be able to distinguish copper and fiber jacket color differences
- Punctual and consistently work hard
- Must be able to learn the skills of a Cable and Fiber Technician
- Take direction, be able to work independently, and maintain a professional appearance and dress
Schedule
Regular hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday (40 hours a week). Evening, weekend, and on-call work as needed.
