HealthCorps is a national, non-profit organization committed to improving lives by addressing health challenges in communities through programming that includes innovative and engaging experiences for teens in education, leadership, and service learning. We empower teens to become change agents within their families, schools, and neighborhoods.

About the role

We're looking for a creative, friendly, self-starter to implement an innovative wellness club, Teens Make Health Happen (TMHH), in 2-3 middle or high schools in the greater Houston area. The TMHH Club empowers teens to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. You will serve as a catalyst for sustainable change, promoting improved health and wellness while creating leadership opportunities for teens at your assigned sites.

As a TMHH Mentor, you will serve as a near-peer mentor to local middle and high school students throughout the academic year. You will lead our health and wellness club, support teens in planning and leading wellness programming (e.g., lunchtime demonstrations, step challenges, and community improvement projects), and contribute to regional events and social media outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strong relationships with teen wellness leaders and site partners to ensure effective delivery of HealthCorps' programming across 2 school sites.
  • Collaborate with your Regional Program Manager, other area mentors, and participate in ongoing professional development and leadership opportunities.
  • Assess your schools' needs and progress by researching health inequities and measuring impact through needs assessments, reporting, and tracking.
  • Manage Teens Make Health Happen Clubs by planning and implementing the program, committing to 8+ hours a week throughout the academic year (3-4 hours weekly on-site for instruction).
  • Host monthly Café O Yea demonstrations at each site and support regional events.
  • Contribute to HealthCorps' social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) by sharing program highlights, stories of impact, and photos.
  • Prioritize health and wellness daily, ensuring local health resources are accessible for all students and staff.
  • Represent HealthCorps in the greater Houston area, embodying the organization’s values and extending outreach efforts.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate college student majoring in (or interested in) public health, public policy, biology, nutrition, marketing, psychology, education, social work, or related fields.
  • In good academic standing with your university.
  • Commitment of 8+ hours each week for the entire Spring semester (full-year placements prioritized, with some single-semester or 1/3 club site options available).
  • Strong desire to grow personally and professionally as a community leader and speaker on health-related topics for teen audiences.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to assigned sites within the Houston area (up to 20 miles).
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Benefits

  • College credit: HealthCorps will work with you and your university to provide college credit, course credit, or practicum hours (based on university guidelines).
  • Professional Development: Ongoing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities with community leaders in public health and education.
  • Stipend: Monthly stipend based on the number of sites served, intended to offset costs (e.g., transportation, meals, professional attire).

HealthCorps welcomes people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives and is an equal opportunity employer.
