Technology Director - Ultrasound & Bioinstrumentation
About the role
The Technology & Innovation Center (HTIC) is GE HealthCare’s global innovation engine, operating through two major hubs (Niskayuna, NY, USA & Bangalore, India) with a highly specialized, multidisciplinary team spanning imaging physics and systems, microelectronics, AI, biosciences, electromagnetics, robotics, materials science, and advanced system engineering. HTIC’s purpose is to drive disruptive innovation that delivers step-change performance improvements in current platforms while pioneering next-generation and cross-segment technologies that lead to new business opportunities. HTIC also proposes and wins external grant awards, typically from the US government (NIH, BARDA, ARPA-H, etc.). Operational & Organizational Leadership
- Lead and develop a high-performing team of scientists and engineers to conceptualize and prototype novel ultrasound and bioinstrumentation solutions that address critical clinical needs, including next-generation hardware platforms with enhanced capabilities and the high-impact applications built upon them.
- Foster a culture of innovation, scientific rigor and transparent execution aligned with HTIC’s operating model and GEHC leadership behaviors.
- Assess and continuously refresh the technical skill requirements of future initiatives and establish targeted development strategies to meet them.
- Drive operational excellence, including resource planning, program governance, portfolio metrics and technical reviews.
- Ensure adherence to quality, regulatory, and EHS standards.
Strategic Research Leadership
- Own and drive the evolution of the ultrasound and bioinstrumentation technology roadmap, aligning innovation initiatives with unmet clinical needs and business strategy objectives.
- Initiate and advance transformative technology opportunities in ultrasound and bioinstrumentation platform development, encompassing novel therapeutic, monitoring, and imaging solutions.
Business Alignment
- Partner closely with clinical collaborators and GEHC business segment teams to accelerate the transition of research outcomes into market-ready solutions to increase impact on patients.
- Operate across multifunctional organizational interfaces to incorporate research outputs into product roadmaps and influence portfolio strategy.
- Identify and execute translational strategies for emerging technologies by leveraging segment alignment, new business development, licensing models, and external partnerships.
External Partnerships & Ecosystem Impact
- Secure external government funding to accelerate the development of impactful technologies that address pressing clinical needs.
- Establish a durable external network spanning academic, clinical, and industry partners to broaden technology reach into adjacent domains and applications.
- Establish a strong presence in the global innovation ecosystem through thought leadership, conference participation, publications, intellectual property and technology advocacy.
Requirements
- Ph.D. degree in Physics, Medical Physics, Electrical/ Biomedical/ Mechanical/ Computer Engineering or other related fields, with at least 10 years of research experience in medical devices.
- A stellar record of consistent research output and innovation as evidenced by peer-reviewed conference proceedings, journal publications and/or patents.
- Proven track record of translating research into high impact technologies and solutions, ideally within regulated or clinically integrated environments.
- Experience leading and developing technical teams and partnering with academic and clinical collaborators to deliver novel technology solutions.
- Demonstrated success securing external funding (e.g., NIH, DARPA, ARPA-H) and managing multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder programs.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Pay
For U.S. based positions only, the pay range for this position is $152,000.00–$228,000.00 Annual. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the pay range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including skills, qualifications, experience and location. In addition, this position may also be eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
