Technology Designer (Telecom/Security Designer)

About the role

This role focuses on leading the full lifecycle of telecommunications and security engineering projects, from early planning through design, implementation, and delivery. As a Project Consultant, you collaborate closely with clients to understand their needs, develop strategic solutions, coordinate multidisciplinary design efforts, and ensure successful deployment of complex telecom and security systems across a variety of building types.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the complete lifecycle of telecommunications and security engineering projects, from initial concept through design, construction, and implementation.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand project requirements, define scope, and develop strategic plans for telecom and security solutions.
  • Coordinate and lead design efforts for telecommunications systems, including service entrance facilities and redundant pathways, scalable WAN/LAN network architectures, WAN/LAN for voice, data and video, outside plant underground pathway infrastructures, broadband and satellite distribution infrastructure, high density storage area network applications, high bandwidth structured cabling systems, wireless LAN design and simulation, and building automated systems infrastructure and connectivity for HVAC, energy, and lighting controls.
  • Coordinate and lead design efforts for security systems, including surveillance video, electronic access control and door hardware, intrusion detection and prevention, mass notification and emergency communications, panic and duress alarming, IP networks and transport technologies, server and storage area networks, parking control and point-of-sale systems, and command and control facilities.
  • Manage client relationships with large enterprise clients and public sector or government entities, acting as a trusted advisor for telecom and security engineering matters.
  • Develop and collaborate with the marketing team on content such as project team resumes, process diagrams, project approach and design philosophy, project profiles, case studies, and website content.
  • Collaborate on and perform technical quality control reviews of RFQ and RFP responses for project opportunities, ensuring accurate and compelling proposals.
  • Participate in and occasionally lead industry presentations on relevant topics to showcase expertise and thought leadership.
  • Participate in and lead project team interviews, articulating project approach, technical capabilities, and value to prospective clients.
  • Manage assigned project teams’ workload, organizational structure, project milestones, and key task deliverables to ensure on-time, high-quality outcomes.
  • Maintain and update monthly workload forecasting summaries to support resource planning and project scheduling.
  • Lead and support fee proposal development, ensuring fee consistency across different client types and project types.
  • Monitor and track financial performance on projects, including budgets, profitability, and financial risk indicators.
  • Monitor and track the need for additional services, and support the preparation and submission of additional services requests when required.
  • Process billing review reports for assigned business sectors, clients, and projects, and review draft invoices for accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage accounts receivable for assigned business sectors, clients, and projects, working to maintain healthy cash flow and timely collections.
  • Establish workload design and construction task deliverable sequences and processes to effectively manage teams and drive performance efficiencies.
  • Train teams on time management and best practices to improve productivity and quality of deliverables.
  • Ensure consistency in drawing development look and feel across business sectors, client types, and project types.
  • Create and maintain specifications using master documents within Microsoft Word, ensuring technical accuracy and alignment with project requirements.
  • Develop cost opinions using master templates within Microsoft Excel, supporting budgeting and cost planning efforts.
  • Apply a clear understanding of design and installation details to support constructible and maintainable solutions.
  • Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for colleagues throughout the firm, providing guidance, mentorship, and thought leadership in telecom and security engineering.
  • Develop detailed scopes of work and review professional deliverables to ensure they meet technical, quality, and client requirements.
  • Work closely with internal and external engineering teams to align design disciplines and coordinate project execution.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10–15 years of experience in the telecommunications and security industry.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in the construction industry in either plan-spec or design-build environments.
  • Minimum 5 years of direct client contact experience in consulting or construction fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing and delivering professional presentations on program status and opportunities for improvement.
  • RCDD certification for telecom-focused roles.
  • PSP certification for security-focused roles.
  • Thorough understanding of construction delivery methods, including design-build, design-bid-build, and negotiated contracts.
  • Experience in at least two building types, such as education, retail, commercial tenant improvement, data centers, or other mission-critical facilities.
  • Proficiency with Revit, with the ability to use it effectively on telecom and security projects.
  • Strong understanding of CAD, Revit, and Bluebeam workflows for design and documentation.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly present technical information to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Proven experience managing internal and external engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop detailed scopes of work and review professional deliverables for technical quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering is ideal but not required.
  • Experience with building automated systems infrastructure and connectivity for HVAC, energy, and lighting controls.
  • Experience with WAN/LAN design for voice, data, and video applications.
  • Experience with outside plant underground pathway infrastructures and systems.
  • Experience with broadband and satellite distribution infrastructure and high bandwidth structured cable architectures.
  • Experience with high density storage area network applications and server/storage area network design.
  • Experience designing wireless LAN systems and performing related simulations.
  • Experience with security technologies such as surveillance video, electronic access control and door hardware, intrusion detection and prevention, mass notification and emergency communications, panic and duress alarming, IP networks and transport technologies, parking control and point-of-sale systems, and command and control facilities.
  • Experience working on educational, retail, commercial tenant improvement, data center, or mission-critical projects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word for specification creation using master documents.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel for developing cost opinions using master templates.
  • Interest in working within a multidisciplinary MEP consulting environment with exposure to a variety of project types.
  • Interest in future ownership opportunities within a consulting firm.
