About the role

The Primary Purpose Technologist Trainee is a training position designed to prepare the employee to work independently as a licensed scientist (Technologist) and to achieve ASCP certification within five years. This role works under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Certified Technologist, or Technologist, providing both technical and non-technical services in the laboratory services area.

Responsibilities

  • Performs waived and automated analytic processes, including qualitative, semi-qualitative, or quantitative tests on self-calibrating instruments and some calibration processes.
  • Oversees calibration on self-calibrating instruments and performs select calibration processes.
  • Operates selected laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of equipment.
  • Performs minor troubleshooting and routine maintenance under direction of a Technologist and/or Technical Supervisor.
  • Maintains records and documentation, performing quality control and equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters.
  • Accurately logs in and processes specimens according to established departmental procedures.
  • Follows appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport procedures.
  • Resolves sample handling problems or refers issues to designated Technologists, and/or Technical Supervisor.
  • Processes data and transcribes data in the laboratory computer system.
  • Trains on new procedures to a prescribed level of competency.
  • Assists others in areas of defined competency when workload permits.
  • Refers requests for special and unusual tests to the Technical Supervisor and/or Group Manager.
  • Affixes to data collection for QA indicators as defined.
  • Affixes to the performance of validation of equipment and test methods as defined.
  • Affixes to the creation and review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) as defined.
  • Participates in internal and external proficiency testing as defined.
  • Stocks and maintains reagents and supplies.
  • Affixes to the training of Technicians as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in the chemical or biological sciences with specific course requirements in chemistry, cytogenetics and molecular biology, hematology, immunohematology, and microbiology.
  • Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Mobile: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.
  • PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment requiring use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

Physical Demands

  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.
  • Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.
