Technologist II, Immunohematology Reference Lab

About the Role

As an IRL Technologist, you will perform basic and advanced donor and patient tests, interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility, resolve compatibility problems, and provide intermediate reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services.

Responsibilities

• Resolve compatibility problems and provide complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services.
• Perform automated and manual test procedures on blood samples.
• Manage receipt, coordination, shipment, and transport of patient and donor blood samples, and document supply and equipment problems.
• Oversee reagent inventory, including ordering, receiving, inspection, and preparation.
• Recognize and resolve testing irregularities, assisting other Medical Technologists in problem resolution.
• Consult with staff at other medical facilities to resolve complex serologic problems and provide special units to transfusion recipients.
• Perform manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable.

Requirements

• MT(ASCP) certification with a Bachelor’s degree in biological science or chemistry.
• Minimum 3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• MLT(ASCP) certification with 5 years of blood banking experience may be substituted.
• State license may be required where applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

• BB(ASCP) or SBB certification and/or experience in a Reference Laboratory.

Skills & Abilities

• Good written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Physical Requirements

• Requires standing, stretching, stooping, and bending for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, pull, push, and move objects of up to 50 pounds.
• May work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time.
• Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, and face shields.

Schedule

• Standard Schedule: Monday–Friday, 11:00 PM–7:30 AM with rotating weekends.
• Baylor shift option: Saturday & Sunday plus one other day (not necessarily Friday), 12-hour shifts.
