Pay

The full salary range for this position is $21–$35 per hour, with an estimated starting salary of $28–$33 per hour. Salary decisions are typically based on factors such as professional experience, leadership, education, demonstrated performance, internal equity, and in some cases, geographic location.

Renewable Energy Technician 2 – Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on wind turbines, large-scale photovoltaic plants, and energy storage systems.
  • Under the supervision of an experienced technician, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade a wide range of equipment in the renewable energy industry.
  • Complete job safety assessments, apply lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures following LOTO plans, identify and report all safety hazards on-site, suggest improvements, and attend safety meetings.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation and work outside regular business hours as needed.
  • Attend required technical and safety training for the position.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as documenting completed work and processing supply orders.
  • Complete daily work orders, time tracking, and other required project documentation.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Renewable Energy Technician 3 – Responsibilities

  • Perform unsupervised corrective and preventive maintenance on large-scale renewable energy assets, plants, and energy storage systems in a timely manner, including:
    • Routine testing and troubleshooting of electrical systems and live electrical work in accordance with industry standards and company safety practices.
    • Restoring renewable energy assets, PV (photovoltaic) systems, and energy storage systems, including insulation, irradiance, and performance testing; IV curve testing; thermal/infrared imaging; torque testing; battery capacity and efficiency testing; and asset/project performance assessments.
    • Working with engineering teams and subject-matter experts to support a continuous improvement environment—upgrades, enhancements, and revisions to PV and BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) systems.
  • Train and supervise Level 1 and 2 technicians in accordance with applicable qualification cards and validate their competency.
  • Conduct site safety assessments, team engagement visits, and equipment inspections; identify all site safety hazards; follow safety regulations and work procedures; lead daily safety meetings; and accurately complete required safety documentation. Seek guidance from a competent source/subject-matter expert for any unfamiliar or unsafe work.
  • Accurately complete daily maintenance logs, warranty and inventory management documentation, service orders, time cards, service reports, and other administrative tasks required for the project/assignment.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation, monitor system components of large-scale photovoltaic plants and energy storage systems, and identify system performance errors and necessary resets on faulty equipment.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
  • Supervise and train lower-level technicians in accordance with qualification cards covering corrective and preventive maintenance. In some situations, may supervise the site team and all contractors to support site operations.
  • Support site budget by ensuring costs remain within budget and maintenance/repairs are performed promptly, working with appropriate experts to reduce the Operational Loss Factor (OLF) in a continuous improvement approach.

Schedule & Work Environment

Both positions require:

  • 80% (Technician 2) or 70% (Technician 3) field work, with the remainder in an office environment using computers, phones, and general office equipment.
  • Working on platforms, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and repetitive use of legs, arms, hands, and fingers.
  • An 8-hour workday, 40-hour workweek, with potential for overtime and night shifts.
  • Frequent exposure to:
    • Extreme weather conditions (cold, heat, rain, wind, etc.).
    • High voltage and stored energy.
    • Moving mechanical parts and vibrations.
    • Confined spaces and heights.
    • Moderate noise levels.

Renewable Energy Technician 2 – Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2–4 years of experience in renewable energy or a similar field.
  • Must meet standards for qualified electrical workers.

Certifications (Assets):

  • Basic Safety Training (BST) from the Global Wind Organisation.
  • Basic Technical Training (BTT) from the Global Wind Organisation.
  • Control of Hazardous Energies (CoHE) certification from the Global Wind Organisation.
  • Rigger and Signal Person certification under the Global Wind Organisation.
  • NFPA 70E and NFPA 70B certification or equivalent.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Valid and current driver’s license, meeting company motor vehicle operation requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic components of wind turbines/photovoltaic energy storage systems.
  • Familiarity with CSA Z462 / NFPA 70E and ability to identify appropriate PPE for specific tasks and environments.
  • Basic understanding of schematics and ability to use a multimeter correctly.

Renewable Energy Technician 3 – Qualifications
