Technician II, Traffic Control (Traffic Control Supervisor)
About the role
The City of Fort Collins is seeking a Traffic Control Supervisor to join our Streets department. The position involves setting up, maintaining, and removing traffic control devices in accordance with MUTCD and City standards, while protecting both the public and work crews from potential hazards. The role combines hands-on fieldwork with technical responsibilities, including designing detailed traffic control plans using software such as RapidPlan and CorelDRAW, interpreting construction blueprints, and identifying underground utilities.
Responsibilities
- Perform safe and orderly traffic control duties within the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards and the City of Fort Collins handbook.
- Protect yourself and the public from road construction and maintenance dangers.
- Protect the work crew from dangers presented by the traveling public.
- Ensure that traffic proceeds smoothly and in a timely fashion through the work zone.
- Aid with towing operations.
- Perform site checks to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
- Set-up and break-down all traffic control devices in work zones.
- Designing and drafting highly detailed layout traffic control plans in Rapid Plan/CoralDraw for the construction of projects within the city departments.
- Knowledge of the city’s standard drawing for public works construction and thorough understanding of utility and partial maps are mandatory.
- Keep other supervisors informed of daily tasks and responsibilities.
- Answer citizen questions and/or direct them to the right person.
- Understand and carry-out the Department’s safety and uniform policies.
- Maintain accident/incident reports and point out safety problems or deficiencies.
- Assist in snow removal.
- Places, removes, and repairs temporary and permanent traffic control devices.
- The ability to read and interpret complex and detailed construction blueprints.
- Identify existing underground utilities, monuments & property markers.
- Comprehend utility, parcel and surveying maps and recommend alternative layout options as per current field conditions.
- Fielding notes must be highly accurate and clearly understandable.
- Maintain and stock traffic control truck and trailer daily.
- Communication with other city departments on upcoming projects and or emergency set ups.
- Supervise Flaggers in work zones.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED and or functionally related licenses or certificates.
- 3-5 years related experience including 2 years training in traffic control; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
- Civil Engineering Technology degree preferred.
- Colorado Contractors Traffic Control Supervisor certification.
- American Traffic Safety Services Association certification.
- Railroad certification (Security and Safety training).

Pay
The anticipated hiring range for this position is $29.33-$36.06 per hour with opportunities for overtime which is paid at time and half (that’s up to $54.09 for overtime!). The annual salary range is $54,037.00 - 81,054.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly). The annual anticipated hiring range is $61,000.00 - 75,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly).
