Technician I, Ophthalmology

About the role

The Certified Ophthalmology Technician I works under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, assuming responsibility and accountability for performing ophthalmic tests on patients as requested by the Ophthalmologist.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct and indirect patient care associated with physician office visits.
• Assists the provider in the examination and treatment of ophthalmology patients, including:
  • Reviewing records and forms and preparing patients for exams and treatments.
  • Preparing appropriate equipment and instruments for surgery and follow-up care.
• Assists the Ophthalmologist by performing technical tests and recording results for analysis and interpretation, including:
  • Manual manifest refractions, auto-refractometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, keratometry.
  • Ocular photography, B-scan, A-scan, retinoscopy, pupillary reflex, and ocular motility testing.
• Conducts vision screening tests, including but not limited to:
  • Visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, visual fields, pupil exams, and other technical tests.
• Records test data and determines the need for further evaluation.
• Prepares procedure rooms and assists the ophthalmologist with clinical procedures, including acting as a special assistant during ophthalmologic surgeries.
• Prepares patients for and performs general preparation of pre-operative patients.
• Provides post-operative instructions as directed by the physician.
• Assists with contact lens cleaning, dispensing, insertion/removal, and patient instruction.
• Prepares and fits patients with special optometric devices as instructed by the provider.
• Instructs patients in correct care and hygiene post-procedurally.
• Orders and maintains ophthalmologic medications and supplies.
• Completes daily, weekly, and monthly medication administration with appropriate competency.
• Participates in departmental quality initiatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum three (3) years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
• Basic Life Support certification required at hire.
• Fully proficient in:
  • Goldman Visual Fields, Manual Refractometry, Corneal Topography, Manual Keratometry.
  • Ocular Photography, Retinoscopy, B-scan, A-scan, and Fluorescein Angiography.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.

Pay

$26.95 - $34.80 per hour.

Schedule

• Full-time, 40 hours per week.
• Shift: Day, Monday through Friday, 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM.
• Travel: Yes, up to 15% of the time.
• Work setting: Onsite.
