Position Summary
The Technician I – Mortar Laboratory supports the testing and evaluation of mortar and related cementitious materials. This entry-level position involves sample preparation, performing standardized lab tests, recording data, and maintaining a clean, organized lab environment in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and test mortar samples in accordance with ASTM standards (e.g., ASTM C109, C305, etc.).
- Perform physical and mechanical tests such as compressive strength, flow, consistency, and setting time.
- Follow proper mixing, molding, and curing procedures for mortar cubes and other test specimens.
- Accurately record test results and maintain detailed lab documentation.
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and workspaces.
- Calibrate and verify equipment as required.
- Assist with receiving and logging materials for testing.
- Comply with safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Support senior technicians and laboratory staff as needed.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED required; technical coursework in construction materials or engineering is a plus.
- 0–2 years of experience in a construction materials testing lab or related field.
- Ability to follow technical procedures and standard test methods.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to work in a dusty and sometimes physically demanding lab environment.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word) preferred.
Preferred Certifications
- ACI Level I – Concrete Field Testing Technician (may be required after hire).
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety (or willingness to obtain).
Work Environment
- Indoor laboratory setting with occasional exposure to outdoor materials storage.
- Physical activity required including standing, lifting, and bending.
