CBS News Chicago is seeking a skilled and experienced news production professional with expertise in local news production, including field, studio, and transmission work. This role supports broadcast and multi-platform social media strategies, as well as cbschicago.com.
Responsibilities
- Operate studio equipment, including teleprompter, jib, editing systems, and transmission control
- Handle field duties such as professional operation of broadcast cameras, drones, digital microwave, non-linear editing systems, and IP-based broadcast applications
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience with ENG news and studio production, including Sony HD cameras, Edius non-linear editing, jib, teleprompter, and lighting
- Safely operate company vehicles, including microwave-equipped vans and trucks, in all weather conditions and potentially long drives
- Bring creativity and imagination to broadcast storytelling
- Meet daily show production deadlines
- Protect news equipment from theft and damage
- Contribute to the editorial process with story ideas and production strategy
- Work all shifts, including nights, weekends, early mornings, and holidays, based on production needs
- Perform physically demanding tasks, such as carrying and manipulating at least 75 lbs of gear, setting up and breaking down broadcast production equipment, often alone and on tight deadlines
- Drive and position large microwave-equipped vans, operate retractable antenna masts, execute long cable runs, and handle tripods, video cameras, and batteries
- Adapt to writing content for air and contribute to social media strategies and multimedia journalism
- Handle complex logistical situations in the field, including interacting with fire, police, and security personnel
- Communicate reliably and professionally with coworkers and the public
Requirements
- Five years’ experience as a photographer, editor, and studio technician, preferably in a top 30 market
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media production, or a similar field (or related experience)
- Familiarity with the Chicago area
- Strong non-linear editing background, including Edius
- Valid Illinois driver’s license
- Drone ENG experience with FAA Part 107 certification (a plus)
- Ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful assignments, including unpredictable news situations requiring extended shifts on short notice
- Flexibility in work schedule, including weekends, late nights, and overnights

Pay
The hiring salary for this per diem position is $67.85 per hour. The range applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay depends on geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
