Technician - Assembly & Integration (Manual Machinist)
About the role
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. It involves Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
Responsibilities
- Operate manual lathes to machine bellows components, end fittings, flanges, and related hardware to print specifications
- Hold dimensional tolerances to ±0.001" or tighter on finished components
- Provide tactical and technical support with focus on assembly of components and integrated systems
- May perform activities such as design, test, check-out, modification, fabrication, and assembly of sub components and systems
- Support rate manufacturing on B shift
- Read, interpret, and work directly from engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and work orders
- Perform in-process and final inspection using precision measurement tools including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and CMM fixtures
- Set up and operate manual turning equipment including tool selection, speed/feed calculations, and workholding configuration
- Fabricate and form metallic bellows from thin-wall tubing and sheet materials (stainless steel, Inconel, titanium, etc.)
- Perform weld prep, deburring, surface finishing, and cleaning operations per process specifications
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers and Quality Assurance to resolve non-conformances and improve processes
- Document work accurately in manufacturing traveler packages and ERP/MES systems
- Maintain equipment, tooling, and work area in accordance with 5S and FOD prevention standards
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on machining experience with a strong focus on manual lathe operation
- Demonstrated ability to consistently hold tolerances to ±0.001" on production hardware
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, optical comparators)
- Working knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Experience machining aerospace-grade materials including stainless steel, Inconel, and titanium
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and process documentation
- Familiarity with thin-wall and delicate workpiece handling and fixturing techniques
- Strong understanding of cutting speeds, feeds, and tooling selection for various materials
- High school diploma or GED required
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with metallic bellows fabrication (hydroforming, mechanical forming, or welded bellows)
- Familiarity with CNC turning equipment as a supplement to manual operations
- Experience in an aerospace, defense, or nuclear manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of AS9100 quality management system requirements
- AWS D17.1 or equivalent welding inspection familiarity
- Journeyman Machinist certification or equivalent trade school credential
- Experience with NADCAP-regulated manufacturing processes
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
- Manual dexterity for handling precision, delicate components
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to coolants, lubricants, and metal particulates
- Use of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear
