About the role
The Technical Service Engineer at Lubrizol applies core polymer science and engineering principles to help customers use our thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) in medical devices. This role involves developing expertise in TPUs, their manufacturing, properties, and performance, and working with both manufacturing plants and customers.
Responsibilities
- Develop technical evaluation strategies for changes to existing products and processes at manufacturing locations.
- Coordinate test sample creation and test entry.
- Review data and determine acceptability of results and potential impact on product properties and performance.
- Advise product management and commercial team regarding technical approval of changes to products.
- Work with procurement to define technical requirements for new raw materials/suppliers.
- Create customer-facing data documents and address technical questions from customers.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% domestically to visit customers and manufacturing sites.
- Collaborate with members of the sales team on a global basis to address regional technical service needs.
- Maintain relationships with the Asia technical service team to align regional strategy with global strategy.
- Maintain a portfolio of customer-driven applications projects by working closely with technical and sales teams.
- Serve as a technical representative during quality complaint handling.
- Drive implementation of product quality improvement initiatives.
- Act as a materials technical expert for internal customers, such as contract manufacturers.
- Develop a strategy to grow a sustainable technical solutions organization.
- Develop and mentor junior associates.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field).
- Commitment to safety and quality practices.
- 3+ years of experience with process or analytical test equipment.
- Prior experience in an R&D laboratory setting.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, collaboration abilities, and ability to write technical reports.
- Familiarity with thermal processing of polymers.
- Strong aptitude and enthusiasm for learning new digital tools (AI, ELNs, Teams, SharePoint) to enhance productivity, accuracy, and collaboration.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specific experience with processing, properties, and/or performance of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), especially thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs).
- Familiarity with regulatory aspects of biomaterials.
- Experience maintaining a lab to 5S standards.
- Familiarity with electronic lab notebooks (ELNs).
- Familiarity with ISO and ASTM standards.
- Demonstrated ability in applying AI tools to boost efficiency and the quality of deliverables.
