Technical Sales Support Engineer
About the Role
Thermal Equipment Technical Sales is seeking an individual to provide exceptional customer service and ensure that customers leave satisfied with complete technical solutions.
The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with a solid technical/engineering background. A background in mechanical engineering or another engineering discipline is required, with experience in technical sales, field conditions in construction, and the HVAC industry being advantageous.
Primary Functions
- Support all Sales Representatives within the company.
- Read and interpret technical specifications and plans for constructing/renovating commercial buildings.
- Apply common HVAC unit components according to manufacturer recommendations and industry standards.
- Identify and resolve operational issues.
- Provide input to installing contractors or service entities to expedite equipment issue resolution.
- Support commissioning agencies for new HVAC system installs, taking lead responsibility for resolving punch list items related to HVAC equipment.
- Commission and troubleshoot various types of new commercial and industrial HVAC equipment installations, including VRV, rooftop units, chillers, air handlers, water source heat pumps, DX split systems, factory controls systems, and VFDs.
- Provide owner training for new equipment installs.
- Offer operational support to customers as needed to assist with understanding their equipment.
- Inspect projects before startup services and regularly thereafter to ensure proper installation of Thermal Equipment.
- Act as the "factory equipment expert" to contractors, answering questions on equipment installation.
- Write technical investigation reports for owners, manufacturers, architects, consulting engineers, installing contractors, and commissioning agencies as necessary.
- Work closely with manufacturers to report application, operational, or quality issues with their equipment products, leading to robust resolutions.
Requirements
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proficient in technical writing for internal and field communications.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Basic computer knowledge with emphasis on Word, Excel, Outlook.
- A superior understanding of HVAC systems is beneficial.
- Ability to create and manage a personal schedule to support customers.
- Great organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks on time.
- Ability to travel daily to local job sites (within ~3 hours' drive one way).
- Ability to stay at job sites beyond an 8-hour workday as needed.
- Ability to attend overnight manufacturer training sessions and occasional out-of-state job sites.
- Ability to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical employees and customers.
- Ability to obtain an HVAC Journeyman’s License through local community college.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- Bachelor degrees in other engineering disciplines may be considered.
- Good driving record with a current driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to visit construction sites and owner’s buildings as needed, including climbing ladders to access rooftop equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and maneuver heavier items with assistance.
