Technical Laboratory Assistant: FT, 2nd Shift

Responsibilities

• Prepare and label specimen slides (Gram stains, peripheral blood smears, bone marrow aspirations)
• Manage lab supply inventory
• Prepare, assess, and document reagents and controls
• Load specimens onto automated processors, initiate testing, recognize and mitigate testing errors
• Perform waived tests across the department
• Perform analyzer calibrations and quality control for test systems
• Understand resulting guidelines, including critical values, delta checks, and triaging STAT results
• Set up specimen plates in Microbiology
• Visually inspect specimens for quality, including volume and gross clots
• Answer the pneumatic tube system and log specimens into the lab information system
• Distribute specimens to testing areas following triage guidelines for STAT and time-sensitive tests
• Follow proper specimen/patient identification processes
• Perform clerical duties: short-registration, order entry, scanning, and filing orders
• Investigate and resolve problems on orders and specimens
• Dispose of biohazardous material and manage specimen storage and retrieval

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Previous hospital laboratory experience preferred
• Basic clerical skills: typing, filing, medical terminology, and computer literacy
• Previous lab experience and/or medical background preferred
• Able to lift objects up to 25 lbs
• CPR/BLS certification preferred
• Excellent phone etiquette and customer service skills
• Punctual attendance at assigned work location
• Outstanding attention to detail
• Ability to work safely and maintain an accident-free workplace
• Knowledge of emergency codes, OSHA regulations, and CDC standard/transmission-based precautions
• Ability to comply with provisions of applicable SDS forms
• Successful completion of a 90-day probationary period
