The GI Lab Technician assists the gastroenterologist and/or surgeon with a number of GI procedures and provides patient care in the clinical setting, specifically assisting with bedside cases done in the ER and ICU units. Also responsible for the care, cleaning, handling, and preventive maintenance of GI endoscopic equipment and instrumentation.
Responsibilities
- Proper handling, preventive maintenance, and cleaning of endoscopes per policy.
- Maintain surgical technician experience by cross-training in the operating room and maintaining competencies.
- Clean and prepare for decontamination reusable endoscopic instruments per policy, including endoscopes and reusable equipment such as biopsy forceps.
- Assist with room turnover, including cleaning stretcher, Endo cart, and other surfaces.
- Maintain general medical supplies in the room per par level list.
- Maintain GI-specific supplies per par list for assigned room.
- Ensure proper equipment in the room prior to initiation of conscious sedation (e.g., Ultrasound for Liver Biopsy, ERCP supply cart for ERCPs).
- Knowledge of C More operating system, including how to initiate exam report, end report, and generate pathology slip if needed.
- Assist in the timely transfer of patients into the GI procedure room (e.g., helping ensure all rooms have patients in them by 0800 and 1300).
- Prior to departure at the end of each day, ensure GI supplies are stocked per par list in the assigned room(s).
- Maintain Cydex Log Book, including daily testing of Cydex concentration and logging when the Reprocessor is flushed and new solution added.
- Maintain and develop par level lists of GI supplies for each room, and general medical supplies for each room.
- Conduct product testing and fill out product testing sheets when trying or trialing new equipment.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by management within job scope.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- BLS certification.
- 1-2 years of experience as a Surgical Tech, GI Tech, Medical Assistant, CNA, Patient Care Associate, Corpsman, or other relevant medical experience.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of patient care and basic human needs throughout the life span.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques.
- Knowledge of acute and chronic disease processes.
- Knowledge of standard precautions.
- Basic knowledge of anatomic structure and human body systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years working in a healthcare environment as a GI Tech or PCA.
- Certified Endoscope Reprocessor.

- Adult (18-64 years)
- Geriatric (65 years and older)
