About the Role

Under general supervision, performs various tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of distribution and/or collection system infrastructure, roadways, and sidewalks. Reports to assigned Team Leader.

Responsibilities

• Performs installation, maintenance, cleaning, repair, and/or replacement of system components such as water mains, service lines, backflow devices, pipes, fire hydrants, hydrant extensions, new service taps, manholes, meter boxes, meters, air/vacuum valves, and appurtenances.
• Exercises valves within the distribution system to ensure proper operation; performs minor maintenance including valve box clean-out, changing operating nuts, and adjusting valve box/manhole grade.
• Conducts above-ground inspections of collection system rights-of-way and larger diameter water lines to verify proper operation of air/vacuum valves, location of manholes, valve boxes, and blow-offs; performs minor repairs as needed.
• Flushes and/or monitors hydrants as part of the flushing program or in response to customer complaints; makes minor repairs such as painting and replacing caps.
• Cleans collection system lines as part of preventive maintenance or in response to stoppages using combination trucks or other approved methods.
• Installs flow monitoring equipment to identify potential infiltration and inflow sources.
• Performs CCTV inspections of collection system lines due to emergencies or as preventive maintenance.
• Maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks, curb sections, and excavated areas.
• Loads and unloads materials for transport to and from the shop and job sites; relocates traffic plates and other materials/equipment as required.
• Operates and maintains equipment and tools, including service trucks, tractors, trenchers, asphalt rollers, loaders, jet rodders, cement mixers, air compressors, boring machines, pumps, jackhammers, tapping machines, pipe cutters, metal detectors, pipe locators, pressure gauges, leak detectors, and various hand and power tools.
• Controls traffic at job sites as needed.
• Performs backfilling, grading, excavation, and digging of holes and trenches.
• Locates water mains, service and utility lines, valves, etc., and verifies utility conflicts by post holing.
• Observes collection/distribution system infrastructure for leaks, sanitary sewer overflows, and other problems.
• Forms, pours, and finishes concrete; applies asphalt as needed.
• Performs minor carpentry and painting work as required.
• Reads water meters.
• Observes prescribed safety rules and uses required safety gear.
• Performs duties on an on-call basis after normal shift hours.
