Team Lead - Sterile Processing

About the role

The Lead Surgical/Sterile Processing Technician ensures proper operation of all sterilizer units through out Surgical Services prior to use on a daily basis. They are responsible for running biological and chemical tests at the beginning of the day and recording results in appropriate logs. They process or oversee all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to SPD, working closely with the Manager and assisting with training and in-service for new and longer-term employees. They maintain preventative maintenance procedures and control procedures on all equipment and instrumentation.

Responsibilities

• Ensures proper operation of all sterilizer units through out Surgical Services prior to use on a daily basis.
• Runs biological and chemical tests at the beginning of the day and records results in appropriate logs.
• Processes or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to SPD.
• Works closely with Manager and assists with training and in-service for new and longer-term employees.
• Maintains preventative maintenance procedures and control procedures on all equipment and instrumentation.
• Aids in the creation of SPD staff schedule.
• Assists in the orientation of new employees to each work assignment area and total department operation.
• Performs other related duties such as examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply levels; testing effectiveness of sterilizer function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure; storing new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; cleaning shelves and work areas and mopping liquid spills from floors as necessary.
• Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and to maintain a safe work environment.
• Maintains count sheets and item inventory in instrument tracking system.
• Aids in compiling monthly productivity statistics.
• Cleans and restocks the Sterile Core, examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply levels; testing effectiveness of sterilizer function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure; stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; cleans shelves and work areas and mops liquid spills from floors as necessary.
• Assists Manager in compiling monthly productivity statistics.
• Cleans and restocks the Sterile Core, examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment; making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply levels; testing effectiveness of sterilizer function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure; stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies; cleans shelves and work areas and mops liquid spills from floors as necessary.
• Prepares and distributes surgical case carts according to physician's preference lists and anticipated needs of the perioperative team.
• Stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies.

• May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.

Qualifications

• Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Minimum Work Experience: 2 years sterile processing experience
• Licenses and Certifications: BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS), American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
• Required Skills, Knowledge And Abilities: Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, equipment and supply management and decontamination of equipment with demonstrated competency, Strong attention to detail, organizational and follow through skills required.
