Team Lead Blood Ops CDL

About the role

Accountable for the on-time delivery of own work and that of others. Responsible for direct coaching and oversight of staff assigned for the day, quality assurance of team deliverables, and serving as a subject matter expert in phlebotomy, blood product collection, and compliance requirements. Consistently strives to enhance existing services, influence action plans, and ensure a customer-focused approach. Works in partnership with colleagues and other departments to achieve common organizational goals, fostering a collaborative team spirit. Drives the mobile drive vehicle and transports mobile staff safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Operate mobile drive buses with a valid CDL, following all DOT guidelines to safely transport staff, supplies, and equipment, ensuring on-time arrival at sites.
• Understand and perform all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.

• Lead the donor collection team, address issues from Donor Specialists, provide feedback, and follow through with team members and supervisors.
• Treat donors with customer service excellence, building professional relationships to enhance the donation experience.
• Establish and build relationships with donors and sponsors.
• Resolve customer issues with potential negative impact and inform supervisors or managers.
• Influence future blood drives through consistent conversion rates, rebooking, sponsor leadership, and service recovery.
• Train and mentor team members in all aspects of the role.
• Prepare collection sites, including set up of technology systems and quality control, troubleshoot, and adjust as needed.
• Perform donor screening, including collecting donor histories and conducting mini-physicals.
• Perform phlebotomy, including automation (Alyx and/or Trima).
• Prepare and pack units for transport.
• Observe donors for reactions, manage automation reactions, address donor needs, de-escalate situations, prevent reactions, and mitigate issues.
• Rebook donors for future donation appointments and facilitate the rebooking process.
• Transport or carpool staff; may transport supplies and equipment.
• Lead drive set-up and create a safe environment for donors and staff.
• Achieve team automation goals, including recruiting and converting donors for automation.
• Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
• Maintain product integrity and ensure proper identification of all donors.
• Maintain organization of departmental records as needed.
• Participate in validation of new processes or equipment.
• Review daily work for accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and resolve issues where appropriate.
• Review quality results, escalate issues and concerns, and perform root cause analysis with leadership.
• Use SOS to troubleshoot.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required within the scope of this job classification.
• Understand and perform in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.
• Comply with all standard operating policies and procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 4-6 years of relevant experience, with 3 or more years of phlebotomy experience preferred; a combination of a healthcare degree or certification may be considered.
• Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of job-related experience.
• Valid driver’s license with prior driving experience.
• Valid CDL with air brakes endorsement (B).
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as Standard Operating Procedures, safety rules, and operating instructions.
• Basic mathematical aptitude.
• Ability to apply judgment to written or oral instructions and organize work for productive workflow.
• Flexibility to work independently and with a team.
• Strong attention to detail and good communication skills, including providing constructive criticism to peers.
• Legible handwriting.
• Ability to learn and utilize computer applications such as Ceridian, Hemasphere, Oracle, and HemaTerra.

Skills

• Effective problem-solving and good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
• Proficiency with tools and technology including personal computers, general office equipment, Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and screening/phlebotomy equipment (e.g., lancet, sphygmomanometer, hemoglobin analyzer, blood mixer, Trima, Alyx).
