About the Role

The elementary school teacher, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision‑making discretion, providing leadership in the educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met. The employee performs school‑based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures, as well as the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable classroom behavior rules and procedures.
• Maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner and create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
• Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students.
• Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods.
• Create a classroom environment that engages students in the learning process and enables them to achieve learning objectives.
• Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these objectives to students.
• Establish learning objectives based on student needs, NCDPI requirements, the Standard Course of Study, and the district curriculum framework.
• Prepare for classes, maintain written evidence of preparation, and keep accurate records for IEPs and 504 Plans.
• Diagnose learning challenges, seek assistance from central office staff as required, and provide instructional programs for all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
• Prepare materials and classrooms for activities; encourage student exploration and perseverance.
• Use techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.
• Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments; act as test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program.
• Observe and assess student performance, behavior, social development, and physical needs regularly.
• Meet with parents/guardians to discuss progress, determine priorities, and encourage involvement; confer with counselors and administrators to resolve challenges.
• Prepare and implement enrichment and remediation programs.
• Attend PLC and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning; participate in professional development.
• Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment; protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Perform related work as assigned or required.

Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area.
• Ability to utilize data and information to make instructional decisions.
• Understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment, diagnosis, and related research.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Ability to learn and use specialized instructional tools, equipment, or software.
• Effective interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Positive communication skills across all settings and mediums.
• Problem‑solving ability and initiative; capable of working independently.
• Ability to work effectively in a deadline‑driven, rapidly changing team environment.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Valid NC teaching certification or eligibility for NC teaching certification in the assigned area.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Pay

Salary/Status: Certified.

Schedule

Full‑time, 10‑month contract.

Reports To

Principal.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools. The district reserves the right to require work at other locations as reasonably needed.
