About the Role

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an appropriate instructional program in a high school environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Teacher designs learning experiences, monitors student progress, and presents information to parents. They develop assessments, reinforce classroom expectations, and work with school administration to prepare students for various assessments. Teachers manage and support students outside the classroom, such as in hallways, on field trips, and during after-school activities.

At the high school level, the Teacher may teach students from ninth through twelfth grade, helping them transition from adolescence to young adulthood and prepare for life after high school. Teachers promote a challenging, equitable, empowering, and developmentally responsive environment, building on middle school fundamentals and preparing students through diverse curriculum pathways.

Responsibilities

• Establishes a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages student agency, ownership, and reflection.
• Designs and implements authentic and engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective strategies to maximize student achievement.
• Uses a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.
• Personalizes instruction based on student needs and manages time to maximize learning opportunities.
• Assesses student growth in relation to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes, adhering to LCPS Assessment and Grading policy.
• Analyzes assessment data to refine teaching and inform instructional practices.
• Communicates regularly with students and parents/guardians about student progress.
• Manages student behavior in instructional settings and other school areas to maintain a conducive learning environment.
• Collaborates with other professional staff to plan instructional activities and maximize learning opportunities.
• Supports colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student learning and mastery of content and competencies.
• May direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
• Participates in the school’s professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum, content, and competencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
• Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license, with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies.
• Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
• Skilled in using multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong human relations abilities.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. They must convey detailed or important spoken instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining stationary for long periods. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

Schedule

10 months, 200 days, 7 hours per day.
