Teacher - Health and PE

We are looking for motivated individuals who desire to effect positive change in young people’s lives in a private day school setting in Roanoke, VA. Small classroom sizes and opportunities for upward mobility are key features of this role.

About the Role

This position serves students ages 5 to 22 who need extra support to find success in the classroom and community across Virginia. The role requires driving, so a clean driving record is critical.

Responsibilities

• Create and implement weekly lesson plans.
• Administer formal and informal assessments to measure student growth and mastery and to evaluate and refine instruction.
• Differentiate instruction effectively to meet the individual needs of students.
• Identify students who are academically at risk and initiate effective intervention strategies.
• Participate actively in professional development.
• Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
• Attend and participate in Community School Committee and various Advisory Committee meetings.

Requirements

• Teaching License with a Special Education endorsement OR content area endorsement.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Safety-Care Certification (Training provided).
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record (less than 5 demerit points).

Driving Requirements

The following violations will disqualify candidates:

• Within the last 5 years:
  • Reckless driving, including speeding 20mph or more over the posted speed limit.
  • Driving under the influence/impaired/intoxicated or refusing a blood/breath test.
  • Manslaughter or negligent homicide.
  • Driving after being declared a habitual offender.
  • Driving on a suspended or revoked license.
  • Driving a commercial motor vehicle while disqualified, under the influence, with a blood alcohol level of .04 or higher, refusing a blood/breath test, or violating an out-of-service order.
  • Injuring a person while racing - felony.
  • Failure to stop at the scene of a crash where there is injury, death, or property damage of $1000 or more.
  • Emergency vehicle violation - death.
  • Vehicular assault or willful stopping, impeding, or damaging a vehicle.
  • Blocking access to the service facility.
  • Attempting to elude police.
  • Operating an unsafe vehicle.
  • Vulnerable Road User – Death.
• Within the last 3 years:
  • Passing a stopped school bus.
  • Careless driving.
  • Three or more minor moving violations within the last three years.

Pay

• Competitive salary starting at $50,000 for 190 days and $60,000 for 225 days.
• $2,000 salary increase for a renewable Special Education teaching endorsement.
• $2,000 salary increase available with a master’s degree.
