About the role
The special education teacher implements the Behavior Learning Intervention & Support Services (BLISS) program under the direction of the school principal. They provide de-escalation and behavior support as needed, plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities, and implement evidence-based special education strategies.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct and indirect social and behavioral skills instruction for students receiving support from the BLISS program
- Pushes in support to students in the general education setting to maximize student learning and provide positive behavioral support
- Supports classroom teachers to foster the use of evidence-based practices and build positive relationships
- Responds to individual student situations as a student resource when called by teachers or administrators
- Maintains a service log for documenting the delivery of student services
- Provides relevant professional learning opportunities to school staff
- Manages students in the BLISS program
- Uses evidence-based special education strategies and techniques during instruction to improve self-regulation and prosocial behaviors
- Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and maintains a conducive learning environment
- Maintains accurate and complete student records and prepares reports
- Develops plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of BLISS students in inclusive classroom settings
- Collects and analyzes student data to inform educational decisions
- Assists in the development of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and implementation of Behavior Improvement Plans (BIP)
- May provide behavior observation consults for students with disabilities not in the BLISS program
- Aids in the preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports
- Supervises paraprofessionals assigned to the program
- Maintains professional competence through participation in professional learning activities
Requirements
- Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices
- Demonstrates accurate knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work
- Demonstrates understanding of functions of behavior and knowledge of interventions matched to each
- Experience with a variety of evidence-based instructional practices and data collection
- Knowledge of special education laws, policies, and practices
- Proficient with Microsoft and/or Google Suite and other related educational software
- Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in special education
- Master's degree in special education preferred
Qualifications
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally
- Must be able to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear while performing the duties of this job

Pay
The minimum salary for this 10-month, 209-day position is $59,663 with a bachelor's degree or $62,527 with a master's degree. The annual salary will be prorated based upon the actual work begin date.
Schedule
This is a full-time position.
