Position Summary
The Weatherbee School is seeking a committed and culturally responsive ESL Teacher to support English Learners (ELs) in acquiring English language proficiency and accessing grade-level content. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in second language acquisition, effective strategies for language development, and a passion for serving a diverse student population in an urban setting.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Instruction & Language Development: Design and deliver engaging instruction to develop students' speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English. Use research-based instructional strategies aligned with WIDA standards and the district's language development goals. Collaborate with content area teachers to support ELs in accessing grade-level curriculum across subjects. Differentiate instruction based on students' English proficiency levels and learning needs.
- Student Support & Advocacy: Monitor student progress using formative assessments and language proficiency data. Develop and implement English Language Development (ELD) plans and accommodations for students. Serve as an advocate for English Learners and ensure equitable access to programs, services, and opportunities.
- Collaboration & Professional Development: Partner with general education teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and provide language supports in the classroom. Participate in ongoing professional learning related to ESL practices, culturally responsive teaching, and inclusive education. Attend district and school-level meetings focused on EL services, compliance, and instructional planning.
- Compliance & Documentation: Maintain accurate records related to student language proficiency, services provided, and program placement. Assist with language screening, identification, and annual assessments (e.g., WIDA ACCESS). Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district policies for EL programs.
- Family & Community Engagement: Communicate effectively with multilingual families and provide regular updates on student progress. Support family engagement by participating in conferences, workshops, and culturally inclusive events. Collaborate with community organizations that support English Learner families.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Valid MA ESL License, or eligibility for certification.
- Experience teaching English Learners in an urban setting preferred.
- SEI Endorsement or dual certification in ESL
- Bachelor's degree in TESOL, Education, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- Minimum of five years of successful K-12 classroom teaching experience
- Prior experience as an instructional coach, mentor teacher, or school leader preferred
- Knowledge of second language acquisition theory and culturally responsive pedagogy.
- Familiarity with WIDA standards and ACCESS testing procedures.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to integrate technology into language instruction.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred but not required.
