About the Role

The English Learner (EL) Teacher performs instructional work with limited decision-making discretion, providing leadership in the educational environment to encourage and nurture learning for all students. This role involves supervising, monitoring, and evaluating students while developing lesson plans to meet diverse student needs. The EL Teacher also serves as the EL leader for implementing the school-wide Language Instruction Educational Plan (LIEP) for all identified English Learners.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures, including the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop and maintain reasonable classroom behavior rules.
• Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
• Plan and implement an EL program of study that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students.
• Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods to engage them in the learning process.
• Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and district objectives, establishing clear objectives for lessons and units.
• Prepare for classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
• Diagnose student learning challenges and seek assistance from central office staff as needed.
• Maintain accurate records for Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
• Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
• Establish and maintain school-based Language Instruction Educational Plans (LIEPs) and service delivery schedules for ELs.
• Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
• Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges.
• Use techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.
• Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress.
• Act as a test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program, following designated guidelines and policies.
• Observe and assess students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
• Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, priorities, and resource needs, fostering strong school-home relations.
• Confer with parents/guardians, counselors, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic issues.
• Prepare and implement enrichment programs and remediation.
• Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning.
• Assist other school staff in understanding EL policies and procedures through training.
• Participate in professional development to improve skills and knowledge.
• Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment.
• Take necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for NC Teaching certification in the assigned area.
• Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment.
• Skilled in verbal and written communication, as well as computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
• Ability to learn and use specialized instructional tools, software, and equipment.
• Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures.
• Strong communication, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.

Certified salary.

Schedule

Full-time, 10 months.
