About the Role

The English Learner (EL) Teacher performs instructional work under moderate supervision, providing leadership in the educational environment to encourage and nurture learning for all students. This role involves developing lesson plans, supervising and evaluating students, and serving as the EL leader for implementing the school-wide Language Instruction Educational Plan (LIEP) for identified English Learners.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures, as well as the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
  • Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop and maintain reasonable classroom behavior rules.
  • Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
  • Plan and implement an EL program of study that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods to achieve curriculum goals.
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes student engagement and enables achievement of learning objectives.
  • Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these to students.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Diagnose student learning challenges and seek assistance from central office staff as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records for Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
  • Establish and maintain school-based Language Instruction Educational Plans (LIEPs) and service delivery schedules for ELs.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges.
  • Use techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress.
  • Assign and grade classwork and homework.
  • Act as a test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program in accordance with relevant guidelines and policies.
  • Observe and assess students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, priorities, and resource needs; encourage parent involvement.
  • Confer with parents/guardians, counselors, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic issues.
  • Foster strong school-home relations and facilitate communication between school and home for EL students.
  • Prepare and implement enrichment programs and remediation.
  • Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning.
  • Assist other school staff with understanding EL policies and procedures through training.
  • Participate in professional development to improve skills and knowledge.
  • Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment.
  • Take necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Perform related work as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for NC Teaching certification in the assigned area.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students.
  • Understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice and business needs.
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment.

Pay

Certified salary schedule.

Schedule

Full-time, 10 months.
