About the role

This is an exempt position responsible for conducting developmentally appropriate instruction and activities for children according to the Head Start Performance Standards (HS), Council on Accreditation (COA), National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) guidelines, and ensuring compliance with all Performance Standards, Department of Children and Families (DCF) licensing requirements and Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Program requirements under the Florida Department of Education, federal, state, and local laws.

Responsibilities

• Maintains knowledge of safety rules and manages the education, care, safety, and well-being of each child.
• Develops and implements daily lesson plans addressing children's individual needs and fostering development through meaningful learning experiences and challenging activities.
• Arranges the classroom-learning environment according to NAEYC guidelines, encourages high-level play, and promotes and challenges student thinking and problem-solving.
• Fosters and collaborates with families to prepare children for kindergarten, promotes universal health and safety precautions, and maintains a safe, clean, and sanitary environment.
• Completes and records assessments for children within 45 days according to Head Start guidelines, completes 15 hours of in-service training annually, and conducts home visits as per program guidelines.
• Ensures regular school attendance, makes timely referrals for special needs, and adheres to USDA Food Program guidelines.
• Engages in positive interactions during lunch and snack activities, attends professional meetings, and communicates regularly with parents/guardians.
• Measures accurate weight and height of children, ensures timely data entry, and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Knowledge and command of English language, including reading and writing skills.
• Proficiency in using technology resources such as Head Start and Catholic Charities databases.
• Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents/guardians, and staff.
• Experience teaching preschool-age children, preferably with a background in child development or early childhood education.

Qualifications

• At least 45 hours of training, including 18 credits in early childhood education.
• A Bachelor's or Associate's degree in child development or early childhood education, or a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with 18 credits in Early Childhood Education.
• Supervisory teaching experience.
