About the role
The Academic and Career Coach works as part of the Career Bound team at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County's Julie & Mike Connors Workforce Readiness Center in Dreher Park, West Palm Beach. The role involves implementing the Career Bound program to assist teens with career goals, academic improvement, and workforce readiness.
Key Roles (Essential Responsibilities)
- Serve as part of a team that implements the Career Bound program, including youth recruitment and retention.
- Work directly with youth to develop and implement a Personalized Career Plan, focusing on academic remediation, ACT/SAT preparation, essay writing, and career coaching.
- Create intervention strategies and systems to increase academic achievement.
- Tutor to identify gaps in academic success and skill sets, creating supplemental resources.
- Provide academic coaching to enhance partnerships between students, teachers, and parents.
- Conduct planning sessions with youth and their parents to discuss the financial benefits of a college credential and scholarship options.
- Assist with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), providing no-or low-cost assistance.
- Ensure the Career Bound Manager and Teen Specialist are knowledgeable about the program and establish a referral system.
- Present workshops on Introduction to College Applications and FAFSA.
- Track scholarship opportunities and assist members with competitive applications.
- Assist with editing scholarship and application essays.
- Arrange and serve as a chaperone for college tours.
- Maintain a system of internal evaluation, including student records, grades, attendance, and progress.
- Monitor outcome data to ensure program strategies are appropriate and effective.
- Produce impact reports on an ongoing basis.
Additional Responsibilities
- Develop training opportunities for parents and students.
- Assist with school projects, reports, and exam preparations.
- Support and monitor student engagement in activities like Study Island, OnTrack, and Flocabulary.
- Write and assist with recommendation letters.
- Aid students with business plan development and FL business registration.
- Chaperone youth during college and business tours.
- Help students identify volunteer service and extended learning opportunities.
- Attend and participate in student and parent conferences.
- Provide direct mentoring and assist with mentoring referrals and matches.
- Aid students with writing speeches and coaching during rehearsals.
- Collaborate with the Career Bound team and Club staff to assist with the Youth of the Year Program.
Skills & Knowledge Required
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited, four-year university or college in a field related to education.
- Possession of a Florida Teaching Certificate or Certification in Guidance and Counseling (Grades PK-12) preferred.
- Knowledge of Palm Beach County high school education system and related resources.
- Strong knowledge of post-secondary education application process.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and implement programs.
- Understanding of and commitment to outcome measurement.
- Experience working with at-risk youth.
- Strong personal commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County's mission and vision.
- Energetic collaborator skilled in building and facilitating relationships with staff, external groups, schools, members' parents/guardians, and others.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong analytical skills, with attention to detail.
