Teacher Assistant/Tutor

About the role

The Teacher Assistant/Tutor demonstrates an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and continued employment are contingent upon successfully passing the State-mandated criminal background check.

Responsibilities

• Aid students in integrating mathematics, reading, and writing skills.
• Maintain accurate academic records, program statistics related to student resource utilization, and student files.
• Help students develop communication, study, time management, and test-taking skills.
• Support students in building confidence in academic subject areas while strengthening problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
• Prepare students for state-mandated assessments, including PARCC, PSAT, SAT, ACT, or equivalent examinations.
• Attend all required staff development and training sessions.
• Create a positive learning environment that encourages student engagement, self-motivation, and academic success.
• Administer and evaluate standardized diagnostic and placement assessments.
• Implement emergency lesson plans in the absence of an instructor.

Requirements

• Completion of the equivalent coursework of a college sophomore (24 credits) and current enrollment in good academic standing, or graduation from an accredited college or university.
• Preferred qualifications include related work and/or volunteer experience.

Qualifications

• At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be waived where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience that specifically prepares the candidate for success in the position.

Skills

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of educational assessment tools and techniques.
• Experience with technology and digital learning platforms.
