Teacher Assistant - Special Education (Post High School)

About the role

Under the general supervision of the special education teacher, the special education teacher assistant supports the implementation of student IEP's (Individualized Education Programs) by assisting the teacher in five areas of service: instructional support, management and supervision support, personal support, assessment support, and materials management.

Responsibilities

• Assists students with feeding, personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, urostomy bag procedures, etc. (can include catheterization, gastronomy feedings, oxygen administration).
• Observes and monitors students having seizures (records data regarding physical activities, breathing, color, etc.).
• Lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing wheelchairs, positioning, and carrying of students.
• Moderately heavy work: exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Performs physical tasks including climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent education and/or experience.
• District inservice training (required after hiring).
• Basic knowledge of academic subjects.
• Substitution or equivalent experience preferred.
• The specific skills required depend upon the assignment, the student's needs and IEP, and the established procedures of the supervising professional.
• The equivalent of two years (48 semester hours) full-time education at an institution of higher education; or an associate's degree; or the ability to pass a Utah State Office of Education approved Para-Professional Test will be required in the future.

Pay

$20.98 per hour (Support Salary Table 2026-2027). Promotions result in a minimum 5% increase.

Schedule

5.9 hours per day • 9 months
