About the Role

Serves in a substitute capacity on a permanent basis for an absent teacher(s) by continuing daily instruction in all areas of curriculum. At other times, assists teachers and students with special projects; works with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects initially introduced by the teacher; or supervises students to provide relief time for teachers during planning periods, conferences, and related professional activities. Work is planned and implemented under the direction of the principal and professional staff. Bilingual and biliterate in a targeted language may be required depending on assignment. Virtual experience may be required based on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Serves in a substitute capacity for an absent teacher(s) following lesson plans in all areas of curriculum; provides necessary reinforcement of instruction and materials.
  • Discusses with teacher(s) what has happened during their absence. As required, extends lesson plans and continues daily instruction during any absence(s).
  • Continues instruction and/or supervises students to provide relief time to teachers for planning periods, conferences, and related professional activities.
  • Assists teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons, methods, strategies, and materials to meet individual needs of students.
  • Works with teachers and students on special projects, lessons, or assignments.
  • Prepares a variety of instructional materials, including posters, charts, transparencies, game boards, and cards.
  • Sets up learning, laboratory, and activity centers.
  • Assists students having difficulties.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff development activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • 48 college credit hours required.
  • One (1) year of experience with virtual learning technology, remote instruction platforms, Learning Management Systems, and video conferencing tools, if assigned to Virtual Academy.

Skills & Abilities

  • Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods, strategies, and techniques to assist teachers in the education of students.
  • Ability to exercise patience, courtesy, tact, and good judgment in dealing with students, teachers, administrators, fellow employees, and parents.
  • Ability to independently plan and/or follow instructional lessons and assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite—Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint).

Language Requirements

If assigned to a bilingual program, must be bilingual and biliterate in the targeted language. Otherwise, bilingual and biliterate in the target language is preferred.

Days Worked: 191 days per year
Months Worked: 10 months per year
Hours Worked: 7 hours per day

Pay

Refer to the Terms of Employment, Benefits and Salary Scale for Unit 4 - SAAAAC (Secretaries and Assistants Association of Anne Arundel County). Grade: SG07.
