Summary
Assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities.
Responsibilities
- Assists in small group pupil instruction; tutors pupils at teacher's request.
- Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and other functions.
- Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for specialized instructional units.
- Handles attendance reports and related clerical functions with the teacher.
- Assists in assembling/hanging materials on bulletin boards and keeping displays current.
- Operates standard school equipment such as laminator, copier, audiovisual, etc.
- Assists in after school and academic assistance lab.
- Encourages proper student behavior in accordance to school collective commitments.
- Supervises students.
Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- A passing score on the WorkKeys Assessment Test and completion of at least one of the following:
- At least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education; or
- An associate's degree (or higher); or
- An approved State or local academic assessment (e.g., ParaPro).
- All Teacher Assistants require one of the following:
- WorkKeys with a passing score of Level 2 & passing Para Pathways assessment; or
- WorkKeys with a passing score of Level 2 & 60 credit hours (official transcripts required); or
- Bachelor's Degree (official transcripts required).
Skills
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Previous work in child care.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical Demands
- Frequently required to sit and talk or hear.
- Occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to push items of 50 pounds (e.g., pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture).
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
Work Environment
- Noise level is usually very loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment.
- Continuously responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
