About the Role
Provide instructional and non-instructional services to students in assigned groups of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and/or school-age children under the general supervision of a certified special education teacher.
Responsibilities
- Assist the special education teacher in implementing IEP and IFSP goals for each student in the assigned classroom as detailed in the weekly lesson plan.
- Act as a substitute teacher in the absence of a classroom teacher, following New York State Education Department regulations.
- Collaborate with the classroom team to design lesson plan activities based on knowledge of children with special needs and child development.
- Work with individual and/or small groups of students on learning goals during classroom activities as directed by the teacher and/or related service therapists.
- Assist students in physical care tasks and health-related activities, including therapeutic feeding, toileting, and positioning in adapted equipment.
- Help maintain accurate classroom documentation, such as student attendance, health checks, observational record-keeping for IEP/IFSP goal tracking, and classroom housekeeping tasks.
- Transport students to and from school, ensuring they are seated securely and have all necessary adapted equipment in working order.
- Work collaboratively with the classroom team to maintain an organized and safe learning environment, anticipating and responding to individual needs of all children.
- Carry out standards for customer service, quality improvement, professional development, environmental safety, infection control, confidentiality, and corporate compliance.
- Attend all mandatory in-services to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices in working with students and their families.
- Collaborate with colleagues and the leadership team in creating and implementing a school-wide Professional Development Plan.
- Perform other tasks to support the operations of the school as assigned by School Administration.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Valid New York State Assistant Teacher Certification.
- Experience with children with special needs.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
- Must meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and other regulatory agencies.
- Must pass a medical and physical examination as per school policies.
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
- Must be able to perform tasks that may involve exposure to children’s blood/body fluids.
- Must be able to assist in the evacuation of children if necessary.
Working Conditions
- Work in a well-lighted and ventilated area.
- Subject to frequent interruptions.
- May be asked to work beyond normal working hours or in other positions temporarily when necessary.
Pay
Hourly Rate: $26.42/Hr.
