Teacher Assistant

About the Role

Devereux New York provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and dual diagnoses. Located in Red Hook, NY, this position is responsible for assisting teacher and residential staff in planning and implementing instructional and residential programs for individual students. The Teacher Assistant ensures students’ welfare, safety, and location at all times, helps maintain a classroom environment conducive to academic and social learning, and guides students in socially appropriate behavior on and off campus. They assist in resolving student crises or contact a supervisor when needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist teacher and residential staff in planning and implementing instructional and residential programs for students.
• Ensure the welfare, safety, and location of students at all times.
• Help maintain order in the classroom to create an environment conducive to academic and social learning.
• Guide students in socially appropriate behavior on and off campus.
• Attempt to resolve student crises and/or contact a supervisor when assistance is needed.

Qualifications

• High School diploma with one year of related experience.
• Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree with one year of related experience preferred.
• Valid NY Driver’s License.
• Flexible, patient, energetic, creative, and a sense of humor.
• Strong passion for working with and helping children and adults with special needs.

Physical Requirements

• Pre-employment physical required.
• Significant and frequent amounts of walking, sitting, stooping, bending, and standing.
• Frequent planned, outside activities causing exposure to sunlight and heat.
• Speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person at normal volumes.
• Vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screens, and forms.
• Good manual dexterity.

Pay

Salary varies based on education and experience:

• High School Diploma: $20.00 - $21.40 per hour
• Bachelor’s Degree: $21.00 - $22.47 per hour
• Master’s Degree or higher: $22.00 - $23.54 per hour

Schedule

Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
