Qualifications

  • Completed at least 2 years of study (forty-eight semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or
  • Obtained an associate’s degree; or
  • Met a rigorous standard of quality as determined by a formal assessment (Mississippi Test: ACT Work Keys – Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Writing Subtests).
  • Pass a criminal background check and a current child abuse registry check in accordance with Mississippi Code §37-9-17.
  • Satisfactory employment record.

Job Goal

The aide will support the educational and instructional goals of the teacher by assisting the teacher in planning and developing the individualized training program for the students.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in district and school professional development programs.
  • Comply with all district policies and procedures.
  • Participate in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning, including a minimum of thirty (30) minutes per week of instructional planning with the Certified Teacher.
  • Model good reading, writing, and speaking skills for students.
  • Work directly with students reinforcing skills taught by a certified teacher, including but not limited to:
    • Conducting learning exercises with large and small groups of children in areas of basic language, reading, mathematics, and social skills.
    • Guiding children in working and playing harmoniously with other children.
  • Monitor written assignments as students work and report to the certified teacher when misunderstanding of an assignment is detected for immediate re-teaching/reinforcing.
  • Alert the certified teacher to special needs of individual children.
  • Provide escort and assistance to students as necessary, including but not limited to: cafeteria, restroom, water fountain, and playground.
  • Remain alert at all times to hazards, including but not limited to:
    • Obstructed walkways.
    • Unsafe playground equipment.
    • Unauthorized personnel on school properties.
    • Unsafe floor surfaces.
    • Any other unsafe conditions.
  • Assist the certified teacher in maintaining individual records of students.
  • Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.
  • Assist the certified teacher in coaching physical activities that strengthen large motor skills.
  • Perform any other duties within the scope of this job description as assigned by the Principal and/or Certified Teacher.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, and other central office administrators.

Equipment

Standard classroom materials.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands

Work in a standard school building environment.

Terms of Employment

184 days annually.
