Teacher Aide/Paraeducator - Long Term Sub

Location: Fairport, NY 14450

Term: Full-time, long-term substitute position starting September 2026

Salary range: $17.00 - $19.40 per hour (actual salary dependent upon experience and contract)

Responsibilities

• Assist the classroom teacher by performing non-instructional duties to support students with disabilities individually, in small groups, and/or during test proctoring
• Provide general supervision of students in various settings including classrooms, hallways, lunchrooms, and playgrounds
• Assist with classroom management and monitor individual student behavior through crisis intervention using positive behavior management strategies
• Perform physical intervention techniques (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) when necessary; must be willing and able to be trained and pass all components of TCI
• Prepare classroom materials, projects, demonstrations, and displays
• Assist with clerical and record-keeping duties or other general housekeeping tasks as directed by supervisor
• Utilize special skills and abilities (e.g., foreign language, arts, crafts, music, recreation, vocational subjects) to assist the instructional program when requested or appropriate
• Use or learn basic computer skills, including email
• Ride the school bus with students and support them in community-based learning activities (work experience, field trips, vocational training)
• Transport self in personal vehicle to off-campus community-based learning activities when required
• Assist students in therapeutic and/or traditional outdoor chlorinated pools
• Support students with self-help, personal care activities, and mobility
• Participate in ongoing professional development to support program placement
• Perform other duties related to specific programs
• Attend meetings as necessary

Requirements

• Civil Service eligibility for Teacher Aide/Paraeducator required
• High school diploma or equivalency diploma (copy must be provided with application)
• One of the following:
  • One year of full-time (or equivalent part-time paid or volunteer) experience working with people with disabilities
  • Certificate of completion of a Child Care course from an occupational school, the American Red Cross, or similar agency
  • A combination of the above experience and certification
• Ability to work collaboratively with team members to support all individuals in program assignments
• Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication with adults and enrolled individuals
• Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation), including:
  • Performing physical intervention techniques
  • Lifting, carrying, or moving up to 50 lbs
  • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and/or reaching
  • Supporting or transporting students in wheelchairs and assisting with transfer, ambulation, and positioning
  • Escorting or walking with students (including running after students when necessary) in multiple settings such as community-based activities, nature walks, and school buildings
