About the role
Erie 1 BOCES seeks Classroom Teacher Aides for an 8th to 12th grade Regents-based program at Maryvale Academy in Cheektowaga, NY.
Responsibilities
- Assists with classroom activities as directed by the teacher.
- Works with individual children as directed by a teacher.
- Helps keep supplies and materials in order.
- Cleans up and puts away materials after use.
- Changes children's clothing and cleanses children, if necessary.
- Affords assistance in implementing the classroom and/or individual student's behavior management program.
- Affords assistance in removing a child from a classroom when necessary or when the child must go to another part of the building.
- Affords assistance in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
- Affords assistance and supervision during games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
- Affords assistance in implementing activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, toileting, and other activities of daily living(e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
- Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.
- Be an active part of the classroom education team, as demonstrated by following teacher directions, being cooperative, showing support for other team members and focusing on student needs and outcomes.
- Discuss parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
- Maintains confidentiality of student information.
Requirements
- The ability to lift/move students either independently or with assistance is a condition of employment for teacher aides who work with non-ambulatory students.
- Initial and periodic physical examinations will test this ability.
- Teacher aides should not attempt to lift more than one-third of their body weight without assistance from another adult or appropriate lifting devices.
Qualifications
- Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
- A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma;
- B) Four (4) years of experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved, not necessarily in an aide role;
- C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
- Additional Qualifications:
- Previous experience with Academic Exceptional Education High School Students preferred.
