Teacher Aide (Brookville)

Assist the assigned teacher in all areas of the daily classroom routine, including maintaining the health and safety of the classroom environment. Classroom assignment may change based on program needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with students under teacher supervision.
  • Attend staff and parent meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in daily planning sessions with teachers to understand educational interventions.
  • Prepare classroom materials as requested by the teacher.
  • Maintain an attractive, safe, and hygienic classroom environment, including regular cleaning and disinfecting of countertops, tables, and toys.
  • Provide supervision in buses, hallways, and playgrounds.
  • Assist with snack preparation and clean-up activities.
  • Provide students with personal care and assistance in daily living activities under teacher direction.
  • Facilitate appropriate communications and interactions between adults and peers.
  • Carry out classroom-specific and individual behavior management programs under teacher supervision.
  • Cooperate and conduct yourself in a manner appropriate to the school setting.
  • Adhere to program-specific policies and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in all required in-services and staff meetings.
  • Complete all required OCFS trainings (5-hour health & safety training within the first 90 days, 15 hours of approved training in the first 6 months, and 30 hours within 2 years).
  • Implement recommendations from supervision appropriately.
  • Adhere to general policies of the organization, including Code of Ethical Conduct, emergency/disaster preparedness, and infection control practices.
  • Fulfill regulatory requirements, including annual physical examination and Mantoux testing.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the needs of students and visitors across specific age groups.
  • Address safety and psychological needs of special age groups, including hearing impaired and physically challenged students.
  • Maintain child and family confidentiality.
  • Exhibit courteous and considerate behavior in interactions with students, families, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Promote positive co-worker relationships, teamwork, and cooperation.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency by effectively interacting with people across cultures, disabilities, genders, ethnicities, and races.
  • Create an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment.
  • Deliver culturally responsive services to students and families.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency required.
  • Criminal background check (CBC) clearance required.
  • Obtain NYS Teacher Assistant Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively.
  • Experience working with children and special education students preferred.
  • Warm, calm demeanor required.
  • Physical aspects may include lifting and transferring students.
