Overview
The Tax Supervisor is a pivotal leadership role designed for an ambitious tax professional ready to bridge the gap between technical execution and client relationship management excellence. This individual will serve as a critical staff member within our Tax Department Small Business Group, overseeing the lifecycle of tax engagements while mentoring junior staff and ensuring the highest standards of client service.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary point of contact for a diverse client portfolio, moving beyond compliance to provide proactive tax consulting. This includes leading annual tax planning meetings, identifying legislative changes that impact client operations, and articulating tax positions in a clear, actionable manner to non-tax stakeholders.
- Identifies, develops, completes, and reviews basic to moderate tax planning situations; completes and/or reviews all workpapers and returns to ensure they meet firm standards; acts as In-Charge on one or multiple engagements through proactive communication and marshaling engagements through the return process.
- Provide regular and excellent client service by maintaining relationships with clients and serving as a primary point of contact for most tax-related questions.
- Take ownership of the technical accuracy of assignments, primarily involving tax returns for individuals and pass-through entities.
- Implement and oversee rigorous quality control standards, ensuring all work papers and research memos meet firm and regulatory benchmarks before final partner review.
- Oversee and perform general bookkeeping functions for select clients, including the maintenance of the general ledger, bank reconciliations, and the preparation of monthly financial statements (Balance Sheet, P&L) to ensure tax-ready books.
- Understand and evaluate general ledger activity, trial balances, and financial statements. Assist clients with bookkeeping and year-end adjustments.
- Perform overall engagement management including reviewing work papers, coordinating and working with other departments, supervising staff and collaborating regularly with the appropriate team members.
- Demonstrate ability and willingness to share knowledge on appropriate/relevant topics with peers through formal and informal training opportunities, including CPE presentations, lunch-and-learns, and professional mentorship.
- Regularly train and delegate to associates, experienced associates and seniors to move projects along and to increase skills among the staff.
Experience and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required;
- Master’s in Taxation (MST) or Master of Accountancy (MAcc) highly desirable
- EA credential earned or intent to achieve within first year of employment required.
- Active CPA license or pursuit of CPA license highly preferred.
- Active PTIN required.
- 6+ years of relevant experience in tax accounting and/or public accounting required.
- Proficiency in professional tax preparation software required.
