Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Tax - Sales & Use Tax
About the role
A Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Tax - Sales & Use Tax advises clients on sales & use tax implications, recommends actions, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, developing strategies, and resolving tax controversies. Responsibilities include research, tax compliance, consulting, and software utilization.
Responsibilities
- Researches complex sales & use tax situations and develops taxability matrices.
- Evaluates and improves compliance processes for clients.
- Drafts tax memorandums and opinions, and reviews client operations.
- Manages engagements and ensures tax engagement letters are adopted.
- Develops and implements new sales & use tax strategies.
- Represents clients in tax authority examinations and negotiations.
- Utilizes sales & use tax research tools and software.
- Provides technical client service and negotiates settlements.
- Reviews and manages client records for proper resale and exemption certificates.
- Assists in strategy development and studies sales & use tax implications.
- Supervises SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates on assigned engagements.
Requirements
Eight+ years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience, supervising tax professionals, and preparing/reviewing tax provisions. Significant business development and marketing experience, CPA certification, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and exposure to tax applications and research tools are preferred.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
- Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.
- Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Superior analytical and research skills.
- Solid organizational skills, especially for meeting project deadlines.
- Ability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work assignments.
- Capable of building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
- Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards.
- Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in sales & use tax filings.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause / effect for taxable conditions.
