About the role
The ideal candidate will reside in Southern California, but all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. This is not a traditional support role. The firm is looking for someone who can own a caseload, driving matters from intake through resolution with minimal supervision, communicating directly with clients and tax agencies, and working alongside attorneys on substantive tax controversy work.
Responsibilities
- Manage tax controversy case files end-to-end (e.g., new file setup, deadline and budget tracking, retainer and A/R management, and case closing)
- Support a broad mix of matter types: IRS and state collections, income tax audits (IRS/FTB), employment tax audits (EDD), sales tax audits (CDTFA), innocent spouse claims, appeals, and Tax Court
- Obtain agency Powers of Attorney; pull and review account transcripts, Wage & Income Transcripts, and related agency records
- Review tax returns, financial statements, general ledgers, and other financial records; complete BDA, financial analysis, audit, and sales tax workpapers
- Draft IRS forms (433-A, CDP requests, penalty abatement requests, and appeals), Tax Court petitions, and FOIA and TAS requests using firm tax tools
- Conduct legal and factual research using AI-assisted platforms and traditional research tools; draft memos for internal and client use
- Communicate directly with clients and tax agency personnel. Coordinating document gathering, providing status updates, and following up on agency requests
- Assist with scheduling and attend strategy meetings with clients and responsible attorneys
Requirements
- 3–7 years of relevant experience in a tax, paralegal, or accounting environment
- Demonstrated comfort working with financial data (e.g., tax returns, account transcripts, financial statements, and general ledgers)
- Prior experience drafting IRS forms (433-A, CDP, penalty abatement, appeals) a strong plus
- Enrolled Agent (EA) license strongly preferred but not required
- Naturally organized and process-oriented; relies on systems, checklists, and workflows to manage deadlines and case stages
- Comfortable with ownership and accountability over close supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable engaging directly with clients and tax agency personnel
- Proactive and fast-moving. Takes initiative to advance matters without waiting to be directed

Pay
The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $100,000, plus performance-based bonuses. Pay is based on multiple factors including but not limited to work experience, qualifications, credentials, location, and market supply/demand.
