Job Summary
A STS Tax Manager, Credits & Incentives advises clients on credit & incentive opportunities, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development, as well as providing credits & incentives expertise to clients. Responsibilities include conducting detailed reviews of tax returns, developing relationships with tax authorities, and managing engagements.
Research
- Identifies complex credits & incentives situations requiring research
- Provides an outline of issues and sources for research
- Analyzes researched facts and sources, preparing detailed reports or credits & incentives matrices
Tax Compliance
- Conducts detailed reviews of income tax returns to identify significant statutory credit opportunities
- Evaluates compliance processes and provides customized and automated solutions
Tax Consulting
- Drafts credits & incentives memorandums and documentation
- Drafts technical memorandums on credits & incentives issues
- Applies all applicable state tax consulting sub-specialties
Tax Controversy
- Drafts responses to notices from state taxing authorities
- Represents clients before tax authorities on credits & incentives issues
- Assists with exam support
Tax Related Software
- Utilizes credits & incentives research databases and software
Tax Specialization
- Provides technical client service to multi-state clients on credits & incentives matters
- Drafts technical memorandums on credits & incentives issues
- Manages expectations of assigned clients
Strategy Development
- Reviews studies of credits & incentives opportunities to identify alternative courses of action
- Develops new or improved ideas to advance clients' positions in maximizing credits & incentives awards
- Suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisitions
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises the day-to-day workload of STS SALT Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements
- Evaluates performance of STS SALT Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns
- Delivers performance feedback and completes evaluations
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field, required
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation or Juris Doctorate, preferred
- Five (5) or more years of state and local/multistate tax experience, with experience in credits & incentives strongly preferred
- Experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis, required
- Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred
- CPA or other relevant certification, required
