About the role
The Tax Manager is a key contributor to the company's tax function, supporting a publicly traded environment with complex multi-state operations. Owns income tax compliance, tax provision (ASC 740), and indirect taxes including sales/use, gross receipts, and property tax. Serves as a cross-functional partner to operations, accounting, finance, internal audit, legal, and treasury teams. Leads, mentors, and develops tax team members; providing coaching, prioritization, and feedback. Drives process improvements through technology and automation. Thrives in an acquisitive and jurisdictionally expanding business environment.
Responsibilities
- Foster a proactive, service-oriented tax function aligned with business growth
- Build strong cross-functional relationships; translate tax requirements into business-friendly guidance
- Align tax strategies with broader business objectives and financial results
- Understand GAAP before applying tax
- Prepare quarterly and annual US tax provisions in accordance with US GAAP/ASC 740 and perform the required SOX control procedures
- Prepare book tax difference workpapers including: mergers and acquisitions analysis, stock-based compensation, 162(m)
- Review book tax difference workpapers including depreciation/amortization and other perm and deferred tax items
- Prepare trend analysis and identify tax rate drivers and variances
- Prepare uncertain tax position memos
- Prepare tax financial statement disclosures
- Respond promptly to all internal and external auditor requests
- Oversee multi-jurisdictional compliance including nexus, apportionment, filing requirements across a growing entity structure
- Prepare or first review income tax returns including: Consolidated 1120, 1065s, multistate reporting, and tax credit calculations
- Manage external tax service providers; ensure quality, timelines, and completeness
- Review and maintain tax fixed assets
- Review quarterly US tax estimates
- Support audits by tax authorities
- Review and timely file monthly, quarterly, and annual gross receipts, sales and use, and personal property tax returns
- Analyze new vendors, new laws, and new entities for use tax applicability
- Review and approve indirect tax accruals and reconciliations
- Communicate financial and P&L impacts of indirect taxes to business partners
- Identify and mitigate indirect tax risks proactively
- Lead initiatives to modernize and scale the tax function through automation and technology
- Evaluate and implement tax tools, data analytics, and AI solutions
- Improve data integrity, reporting speed, and overall efficiency
- Standardize and document processes to support scalable growth and audit readiness
- Drive continuous improvement mindset across the tax team
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax required; CPA preferred
- Minimum 5 years experience in Tax
- Public Accounting or Fortune 500 experience preferred
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
- Demonstrated expertise as a senior tax analyst, including but not limited to:
- Strong expertise in income tax, ASC 740, and multi-state taxation
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong proficiency in Excel, data analytics, and tax technology tools
- Ability to lead through complexity and ambiguity
- Proven project management and prioritization skills
- Excellent communication skills with ability to influence senior stakeholders
- Track record of developing talent and building high-performing teams
- Operates independently with accountability for outcomes, not just deliverables
- Anticipates issues and drives solutions proactively
