Tax Lead

Responsibilities

• Build and manage sales & use tax, VAT/GST, and digital-services tax compliance, including nexus analysis across our growing customer footprint.
• Support the ASC 740 provision and the federal, state, and international income tax filings with external preparers, building the close-cycle processes, documentation, and controls to match company scale.
• Own payroll reconciliation, flux analysis, and related journal entries, partnering with Finance and the People team to ensure accuracy across pay runs and periods.
• Advise on employer tax obligations across jurisdictions, relying on external advisors as needed; partnering with the People team on payroll withholding and operations, leaning on external advisors where needed.
• Manage the tax treatment and compliance for employee equity options, collaborating with Legal as needed on equity-related tax topics.
• Identify opportunities to optimize Runway's global effective tax rate (including R&D tax credits, transfer pricing, and more) as international operations scale.

Requirements

• 6+ years of corporate tax experience, ideally a mix of Big 4 and in-house at a high-growth company.
• CPA required.
• Broad range across direct tax, indirect tax, payroll tax, and equity compensation, with the ability to leverage technical tax advisors as needed with the right questions.
• Strong communicator who can translate complex tax issues for non-tax stakeholders.
• Experience with tax software (e.g. Sphere, Avalara, etc.) and ERP platforms (NetSuite).
• Experience with HRIS Rippling a plus.
