About the role
The Tax Intern, Core Tax Services will utilize their educational background and organizational skills to support the firm's client base through the preparation of tax returns and extensions under the supervision of experienced Core Tax Services professionals.
Responsibilities
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Ensure self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Effectively use referencing systems and workpapers that tie to tax returns.
- Complete tasks and organize files to minimize rework by reviewers.
- Collect data to comply with filing requirements and take initiative on impending due dates/engagement letters.
- Work with tax software applications to complete simple tax returns for review.
- Perform quarterly estimates and prepare extensions.
- Assist with responses to notices from the Internal Revenue Service.
- Assist in the projection of year-end filings.
- Correctly and proactively apply Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48).
- Assist with components of income tax provisions.
- Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes.
- Operate online research tools to gather pertinent tax information.
- Monitor tax law and client factual developments regularly (daily, weekly, or bi-weekly).
- Develop and communicate viewpoints regarding how developments might affect clients.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Accounting or other relevant field.
- Pursuing a Master’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field preferred.
- Actively pursuing school credits to become a CPA.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team setting.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Seeks advice of appropriate superiors regarding compliance issues.
- Ability to prepare simple tax returns.
- Leadership experience preferred.
