Tax Experienced Manager, International Tax Services
About the role
An International Tax Experienced Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications relating to their business objectives, recommending alternate courses of action, and identifying methods of complying with tax regulations. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development within the area of expertise, as well as recognizing and applying potential changes in tax policy to compliance and planning.
Responsibilities
- Tax Consulting
- Assists clients and BDO client service teams in developing ideas, structures, and transactions with a focus on international matters.
- Interprets existing and new laws, along with client facts, to maximize client benefits and identifies needs for other expert resources.
- Coordinates with foreign BDO offices.
- Develops and maintains workplans for tax consulting projects.
- Identifies financial reporting and cash tax impact of consulting engagements.
- Applies knowledge of transfer pricing and foreign tax regimes.
- Coordinates completion of compliance/reporting requirements with client service teams.
- Assists in managing client expectations.
- Tax Specialization
- Applies an in-depth understanding of technical and practical international tax issues and explores specialization in one or more areas.
- Organizes and conducts effective internal CPE training sessions.
- Develops a knowledge base and personal network with professionals in selected foreign jurisdictions.
- Research
- Identifies complex situations requiring research and outlines issues and appropriate sources.
- Analyzes researched facts and sources before composing detailed reports.
- Prepares Written Tax Advice (WTA) and confers with the National Tax Office as needed.
- Tax Compliance
- Assists in managing client engagements.
- Conducts detailed reviews of international tax aspects of U.S. tax reporting and client-supplied data.
- Applies in-depth knowledge of U.S. tax compliance and filing requirements related to international operations.
- Understands and applies firm policies, standards, and manuals regarding tax accounting matters.
- Tax Controversy
- Represents clients before the IRS with guidance from senior international tax professionals.
- ASC 740-10
- Applies standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements.
- Assists in reviewing international aspects of tax provisions, including coordination with non-U.S. BDO colleagues.
- Trains others in technical tax, ASC 740, software, research, and other tax matters.
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises the day-to-day workload of International Tax Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
- Reviews work product and ensures technical development of team members.
- Delivers performance feedback and completes performance evaluations.
- Acts as a mentor to team members.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree, required; focus in Accounting, preferred.
- J.D., LLM, and/or MST/MBT, preferred.
- Experience
- Six (6) or more years of prior experience in corporate tax, international taxation, legal professional services, or equivalent experience gained through an advanced degree program, required.
- Experience in International Tax, required.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis, required.
- License/Certifications
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or equivalent), required.
- Software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), preferred.
- Experience utilizing RIA, BNA, LexisNexis, and/or Westlaw, preferred.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superior analytical and legal/tax research skills, including building models and analyzing financial/numerical data.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet project deadlines and focus on details.
- Ability to multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.
- Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Capable of effectively managing a team of tax professionals and delegating work assignments.
- Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.

- Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on assigned engagements.
- Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information for tax filings and widely used tax forms.
- Advanced understanding of technical and practical issues in taxation and law.
- Strong legal writing background and familiarity with the IRAC method of analysis.
Pay
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply:
- National Range: $94,500 - $189,000
- Maryland Range: $94,500 - $189,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $94,500 - $189,000
- Washington DC Range: $94,500 - $189,000
