Tax Director – State and Local Tax
About the role
Directors within our State & Local Tax (SALT) practice oversee and complete tax projects, provide innovative tax planning, consulting and compliance for a variety of clients, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to venture backed startups.
Responsibilities
- Engage in business development activities (prepare proposals, present in webinars, identify tax planning and tax savings opportunities across the full spectrum of state and local taxes, initiate and collaborate with other service lines to market comprehensive tax strategies for prospective clients, etc.)
- Review complex state income/franchise tax returns across various entities (partnerships, S-corporations, C-corporations).
- Lead state and local tax audits and advocate for clients throughout the controversy process.
- Review voluntary disclosure agreements, nexus, apportionment, and taxability studies.
- Review multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax returns.
- Maintain communication with clients to ensure satisfaction, meet deadlines, remain current on legislative changes, and lead change effectively.
- Collaborate with Federal Income Tax Compliance Groups to ensure maximum multi-jurisdictional strategy.
- Research complex client issues and draft technical tax memoranda to address tax planning and solutions.
- Supervise, train, mentor and evaluate the performance of associates, senior associates, managers, and senior managers.
Requirements
- 10+ years relevant work experience in an accounting firm with at least 10 years of State and Local Tax Experience.
- Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree required: Accounting, Finance, Economics, Law or related degree.
- Advanced credential allowing for client representation before the Internal Revenue Service and state tax jurisdictions required (i.e. CPA or JD).
- Self-starter with the initiative to seek out opportunities and ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Proficient use of technology.

Salary Range: For individuals hired to work in Los Angeles, the expected base salary range for this role is $194,000 to $298,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and skill set.
